Tax Return Deadline Extended Again this Year!

Last year procrastinators got a little breathing room as a  little-known Washington, D.C. holiday called Emancipation Day delayed the filing deadline of Federal Income Tax.  Now this year it happens again!

The traditional Federal Tax Filing deadline of April 15th falls on a Sunday this year.  Normally, you might think that taxes are due the next business day, which is Monday, April 16th.  However, that day is reserved for Emancipation Day, marking the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln in 1862, which freed the slaves in the District of Columbia. Emancipation Day has only been an official public holiday since 2005.

This year your 2011 Federal Income Tax Return is Due on April 17, 2012.

Note that your Colorado State Tax Return is also due on April 17th, so there is no need to worry about any conflicting dates.

You should also be aware that this has NO Effect on late filing deadlines.
